Prodigal Pastor
Prod-i-gal (adjective):
1. having spent everything
2. recklessly extravagant
I know what you’re thinking—why on earth would a respectable and reasonably sane pastor title his web page “Prodigal Pastor”? Perhaps I’m not very respectable, reasonable, or even sane! The truth is I’m trying to be honest.
The story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 does not commend us to reckless living and neither am I. What I hope to accomplish through this site and as a pastor, is to invite God to build a ministry on my spiritual and moral bankruptcy.
I became a Christian as a little boy, but as a young adult, like the Prodigal Son, I wasted some years and had a “pigpen experience”. I actually wondered if God could still love me. So, I asked Him the most dangerous question imaginable: “Do you still love me?” In that moment He recklessly and extravagantly loved me. He didn’t do the safe thing—the human thing—and say “of course I love you!” He climbed into my prodigal pigpen and embraced me. And herein lays the danger: When you ask, you get loved. And God’s love always changes you! I know because it changed me–and now I serve a Prodigal God!
So I’m a Prodigal and a Pastor. Every day I’ll be trying to take another step on the long journey home. Along the way I’m hoping a few other Prodigals will join in and become my traveling companions—I could use the company! How about you—will I see you on the road?
