Making Room
Did you ever get a strange comment from a teacher on a writing assignment? I have.
While in seminary, I was asked to compose an original prayer suitable for a worship service. I was sure angels danced on ether skies to the sounds of my poetry! However, a few days later I received my graded paper back with the following comment: “Good job but don’t forget to make room for the Holy Spirit!” I didn’t like it, but my teacher was right and his words haunt my prayers to this day.
How much room do you make for God to work when you have prayed? Think about it…
Many years ago an aging Japanese pastor was praying for a bicycle. In Japan most people walk or ride a bicycle. For most of his life the pastor had walked but his ministry had grown to be quite large so that he could no longer keep up with all his parishioners. So, he earnestly prayed for a bicycle.
After a few days of prayer, a member of the congregation came to the pastor’s apartment for a visit and found him clearing a small space along a wall near his front door. When he asked why he was clearing the space, the pastor responded “I’m making room for the bicycle God is going to give me.”
Why do I have so much trouble “making room”? Perhaps I have too much of my stuff to make room for any of His! The problem with having stuff is it makes you forget. I need to return to the sty and remember what I lost before being found.
